The Top of the Mississippi
DeSoto County lies directly south of Memphis in North Mississippi and includes the towns of Southaven and Hernando. These towns have become popular destinations for Memphians who want to escape from the bustle of city life to raise their families in the suburbs and still have an easy commute into Memphis.
Desoto County is only about 15 minutes from the Tunica casinos, making this a great location for casino employees.
Southaven, located just South of Memphis, is known as “The Top of Mississippi” because it is located near the southern border of Tennessee. This fast-growing community has the highest median income in the state of Mississippi.
The first high-rise building in Desoto County was the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto. As the largest hospital in Mississippi, it includes an Outpatient Diagnostic Center, a Women’s Center, an eleven-story hospital tower, and an expanded Emergency Department.
Southaven may be small, but it definitely has a lot of entertainment options. The Snowden Grove Amphitheater hosts numerous concerts each season from performers such as ZZ Top, Candlebox, Taylor Hicks, and many more. Nearby, the Snowden Grove Park is the United States’ largest youth baseball complex and hosts several baseball tournaments from across the nation. For a little evening entertainment, head on over to The DeSoto Civic Center,home of the Mississippi RiverKings, and host to a number of concerts and other shows.
Healthy and Playful
Hernando has received national recognition for being a great place to live. This town has four times been named a “Playful City USA”; named to CNN/Money Magazine’s 2011 “100 Best Places to Live” (scoring 79th in the ranking); featured in CNN’s “Great American Small Town” series; and chosen to be featured in ABC’s “Everyday Health” program, which aired in January of 2012.
This town’s slogan is “Mississippi’s Front Porch”. The town is known for its Christmas parade, 4th of July parade, Movies on the Square, Sunset on the Square concert series, Square on Tap Beer Tasting, Water Tower festival, Tin Roof Art Walk, Earth Day Celebration, WWII and Korean War events, 175th Anniversary Celebration, A’Fair arts and crafts show, car shows, and a host of other events.
