Home of “The King”

Neighborhood News

Whitehaven is the largest neighborhood in South Memphis. Graceland is still the major entertainment attraction in this area. The annual Elvis Week attracts many thousands here annually to remember “The King” on the anniversary of his death on August 16, 1977.

Elvis Presley bought his famous home in 1957 and spent two decades living in Whitehaven. Soon after he moved here, the farmland surrounding the estate was subdivided into home sites.  The owners of Elvis Presley Enterprises and officials from the City of Memphis are collaborating on a plan to redesign and redevelop the area around Graceland, preserving and enhancing the Memphis area’s top tourist attraction.

Eating, shopping and more

Instead of chain restaurants, you’ll find good, down-home cooking in South Memphis. Great barbecue restaurants include Marlowe’s Ribs and Restaurant, Jim Neely’s Interstate BBQ, and Pollard’s Bar B Q. If you are looking for chicken wings, try Uncle Lou’s Fried Chicken or Don Don’s Hot Wings. For shopping, stop by Whitehaven Plaza, located in the area’s commercial center. Southland Mall is located near Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley Boulevard and is  a destination for shoppers from all over the region. A very popular Nike outlet store is located at Elvis Presley and Raines Road.

Whitehaven is within minutes of Memphis International Airport and the FedEx Airport hub, two of the city’s largest employers.  The area is also close to I-55 which leads into Mississippi, and is a 20-minute drive from the Tunica, Mississippi casinos, making it a convenient place to live for casino employees.
