Selecting a roommate.

Should you live with a friend, a stranger or alone?

Moving into an apartment can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to figuring out who to live with. Do you live with your best friend? A co-worker?  A stranger from Craigslist? Or is it better for you to live alone? If you want to live with someone else, it is extremely helpful to have an honest and open conversation before moving into an apartment with that person. Before that day comes, here are some key areas to think about when deciding on a potential apartment roommate:

Good communication with your roommate is "key".

Choosing the right roommate.

  • What is your schedule like? If you travel a lot or are working long hours, then it might not matter if it is a friend or stranger.
  • Do you like routine? Do you like to turn your music on when you wake up at 6 am, watch what you want to watch at night or sing loud in the shower? If that sounds like you, then you might not want a roommate.
  • Do you worry about living alone, but still like being alone and having your own space? Having a stranger, or an acquaintance, might be a better option for you.
  • Are you very social and love to have friends over and parties on the weekend? If that sounds like you, then you might want to consider having a friend as a roommate so you can enjoy those activities together.

Remember that when choosing a person to live with, you need to feel comfortable. Living in an apartment with a friend, stranger or alone, can have its advantages and disadvantages. You have to weigh the pros and cons and see which one best fits your schedule, lifestyle and personality!
