In East Memphis: Art After Dark at Dixon Gallery and Gardens

January 10, 2015

Dixon Merriweather

Check out Lester Julian Merriweather: Nothing Is For Ever Last at Dixon Gallery.

Meet Memphis artist Lester Merriweather on January 15, 2015, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Dixon Gallery. Recognized for his large scale “drawings” created with tape on walls and windows, Merriweather recently has employed photographic imagery in the form of collage, placing cut paper sourced from magazine advertisements onto large painted canvases. By using images from ads for jewelry and other goods smacking of conspicuous consumption, Merriweather addresses the materialism of modern life. In the works on view, ships sail over oceans filled with riches cut from today’s magazines, challenging viewers to connect contemporary capitalism with the colonial conquests of long ago.

There will also be music by the Tom Lonardo Trio. Enjoy light refreshments, entertainment and a cash bar with your admission to the gallery.
